What Can I Cook With What's in My Fridge?
A simple method to turn a random fridge into dinner — plus the apps that do it for you.
The 4-step method
- Inventory what you have — especially what's closest to expiring. Cook that first.
- Pick a base — a carb or anchor: eggs, pasta, rice, potatoes, bread/tortillas, or beans.
- Add a protein and a vegetable you already have on hand.
- Choose a forgiving method that absorbs odds and ends: stir-fry, frittata/omelette, soup, traybake, or a grain bowl.
Quick ideas by what's on hand
- Eggs → frittata, shakshuka, fried rice
- Pasta → toss with any vegetable + garlic and olive oil, or a quick tomato base
- Rice → fried rice, a grain bowl, stuffed peppers
- Potatoes → traybake, hash, soup
- Bread / tortillas → toasties, quesadillas, panzanella
- Beans / canned tomatoes → chili, stew, soup
Use what's expiring first
Cooking from your fridge is the simplest way to cut food waste — an average family throws away roughly CA$1,500 of food a year. Plan around what's closest to its expiry date, and you buy less and waste less at the same time.
Let an app do the thinking
This is exactly what MealPill is built for. You add what's in your fridge and it estimates expiry dates for you, then builds one weekly plan around what you have — plus your taste and schedule — generates a grocery list of only what's missing, and shows weekly insights on nutrition, variety, waste and budget. It works in English, Ukrainian and Russian. It's a web app today, with native apps and a shared Family plan coming. (To be clear: MealPill uses manual ingredient entry, not a fridge photo.)
Frequently asked questions
Is there an app that plans meals from my fridge?
Yes — MealPill plans around what you have and tracks expiry. Some apps (e.g. Samsung Food, paid) can identify ingredients from a photo.
What can I make with just eggs and vegetables?
A frittata, omelette, shakshuka, or fried rice — eggs are the most forgiving base.
Do I need recipes?
No — a base + a protein + a vegetable + a forgiving method is enough. Or let MealPill generate the plan.
